OpenTX - Introduction

The Taranis X9D radio has an extensive range of features that extend beyond the everyday requirements of most pilots flying radio controlled aircraft. But to make the most of its capabilities, I wanted a concise source of information that allowed me to look up information quickly when I wanted to add features. As I learned about my Taranis, I wrote down some notes. Those notes grew into this website.

Radio

The firmware used by the radio is called ‘OpenTX’. OpenTX is what provides the radio with its large suite of features. For the pilot who wishes to make the best use of these features, a resource of reference information about OpenTX can provide a quick means of learning about a feature when required.

The width of each web page conveniently fits into an A4 page without scaling when printed.

Overview

For those who need a guide on where to start with a new Taranis, see the Beginner’s Guide.

To get an overview of OpenTX, refer to the Control Flow Diagram and learn how to navigate around the screens. It also shows how the screens are grouped. There is a group of main screens, a group of model screens etc. and the index below contains reference guides for each screen in the Model group and the Radio group.

Use the switch assignment sheet to plan which switch has which function.

There are also application notes that describe how to implement a number of features.

The Companion software that allows OpenTX set up to be done on a PC is currently outside the scope of this website.

OpenTX Versions

OpenTX version 2.0

The links in the Contents below provide comprehensive and very condensed quick reference information for firmware version 2.0 of OpenTX.

OpenTX version 2.1

For a description of some of the features of OpenTX firmware version 2.1 that are different to those of version 2.0, click here. Also all new application notes will now appear under version 2.1.
